This book. THIS BOOK TORE ME APART AND SCATTERED ME IN DESPAIR. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
At first, you may be confused about the Noise and the kind of world the main character, Todd, lives in. It gets so much better as you keep reading.
The only thing that was annoying in this book was the misspellings. For example, instead of though, it was spelled tho. I’m assuming that Patrick Ness did that on purpose to emphasize on accents. I did however, got used to it especially since a lot of people are texting with chatspeak these days.
The plot was interesting and fast paced most of the time. Never once in the book I felt the urge to look at my texts or go onto social media. I just kept reading because it was THAT good. AND THE ENDING. The book just gets so much darker and you’re just wondering what’s the deal with Ben and Cillian sending Todd away. What’s the point?
Aaron reminds me of those antagonists in Indie horror RPGs who keep following you. He really set off a stalker-like psycho. He seemed different than the rest of Prentisstown when it came to hunting down Todd. Apparently, he wanted TODD to kill him because it was his “destiny”. If that doesn’t seem strange to you, I don’t know what to really say.
When Manchee died, I WAS SO SAD. Todd always seemed annoyed at him but Manchee was actually a good dog. When he died, it seemed like…he was some sort of pawn. Todd sends him out as a distraction to rescue Viola and then AARON CATCHES MANCHEE AND KILLS HIM. HE FREAKING BREAKS HIS NECK IN HALF OR SOMETHING. WHAT THE ACTUAL EFFING-
It was just a real sad death and then Todd keeps imagining where Manchee would be and THAT MAKES IT WORSE. When he woke up, I was HOPING that Viola was with him all along and that he was dreaming about Manchee’s death and the rescue but NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE.
So Viola and Todd eventually reach Haven BUT THE ARMY IS ALREADY THERE?! NOOOO!!!! AND VIOLA IS ALMOST DEAD. All this running ends off with them right at the army’s feet and then that’s it. That’s the end.
This book is an emotional roller coaster. Patrick Ness has written this book perfectly and good at developing the characters. He’s so good at writing emotions and I can’t wait to read the next book! (BTW, the covers are so pretty)
