The Accidental Hero

Jack Blank doesn’t even know his real last name. All he knows is his dreary life at St. Barnaby’s Home for the Helpless, Abandoned, Forgotten, and Lost.

But one morning a Robo-Zombie straight out of one of Jack’s favorite comic books tries to blow him up. Then he’s whisked off to a secret country called the Imagine Nation-a magical place where all things fantastic and unbelievable in our world originate, including Jack.

Jack soon discovers that he has an amazing ability, one that could make him the savior of Imagine Nation and beyond-or the biggest threat they’ve ever faced.

This book starts out pretty “easy”. It’s what fantasy books start off as basically. The main character is living his/her life that may be miserable and then they get into the fantasy world (In this case the Imagine Nation).

For the majority of the book, Jack is training with Allegra and Skerren. Skerren is that guy who just despises the main character but then grows to like him. He had a reason to back up his hatred for Jazen and I’m glad that the author made that reason. It wasn’t just because he was “jealous” either. Who would be jealous of him anyway?

Jack also happens to be a Rustov. Which was sort of surprising at first but hey, when is it ever easy for the main character? This also, was sort of normal and cliche.

It didn’t bore me in anyway. The writing and pacing was interesting enough despite it only mostly being about Jack passing the tests and trying to find out who he is.

DO NOT let the normalness fool you! Near the end, things really start picking up. You find out that Jack is actually Revile, an enemy of the Imagine Nation. He even fights himself at the very beginning. I was definitely NOT expecting this to happen. I was so sure on what will happen and then, you suddenly find out.

I also expected him to sacrifice himself for the greater good. I mean, that’s what protagonists do. They make the sacrifices. But Jack wanted to live. It may be because he’s 12 and young or just selfish when it comes to life or death. Either way, Jack wanted to live, even when he knew that he was going to kill hundreds of people in his future life.

When Jazen jumped out of the building, it happened so fast. He carried the virus and was sending information to the Rustov the entire time! This was also a plot twist to me. Jazen seemed so innocent and he was. I just couldn’t believe what happened to him and I’m glad he died proving that he was good. I kind of hoped for him to somehow be alive.

Overall, I loved this book. The twists and turns at the end threw me way off. I never expected for it to happen. This is NOT a normal fantasy book. It is unique and it was worth the read!
